DAVID HODGSON - LANCASHIRE PRESIDENT

DAVID HODGSON - LANCASHIRE PRESIDENT

Andrew Perry6 Jul 2013 - 16:57

We are proud to tell members that David Hodgson has been inducted as President of Lancashire RFU for the coming season.

David was born in Preston but as his parents tended to be a bit nomadic, he enrolled as a border at Lancaster Royal Grammar School when he was 11 years of age.
Playing rugby at school he progressed and was eventually, in 1959, selected for Lancashire Schools against Yorkshire and Cheshire. Both matches were won and David played alongside Dick Greenwood, later to be an England international and father of Will Greenwood, former England World Cup winning centre and now Sky Sports pundit. The picture at the bottom of this article shows David standing alongside Greenwood snr. The only clue is that they are on the back row!
On leaving school he went to live with family in Barrow and played for Furness but then started work in Blackburn in 1964 and played a number of years with them. He was Captain of Blackburn from 1966 – 69.
A change of job in 1979 to a position with 3M took David to the Midlands where he started a long association with the Worcester club as player then 1st team coach and finally President.
He returned to Lancaster in 1997, renewing his acquaintance with both the Vale and Blackburn but, on being approached by a lifelong friend, Mel Whittle, David took over a role as Under 20s coach to the Lancashire team in 2000. In 2007, he also took the Senior team under his wing as both Manager and Chairman of Selectors, being responsible for the County’s run of Championship titles that has seen them become the County which has held the trophy on most occasions.
In 2011, David stepped down from Lancashire duties with the teams but was then appointed as one of the Senior Vice-Presidents with his year of office starting in June 2013.
The club are delighted that all David’s work in Rugby has been rewarded and we wish him every success in his year of office.
